Only 3 km from the New Brunswick border, Amherst is the first town you will encounter in Nova Scotia and begins your scenic tour of the Sunrise Trail. It is the largest town in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia with a population of 9,500 and growing. Amherst was first settled in 1764 by immigrants from Yorkshire following the expulsion of the Acadians, with the original settlement being located three kilometres southwest of the present town on the shore of the Bay of Fundy.
